Soccer: Kelmscott claims first win in 18 months

Francis CurroComment News

KELMSCOTT defeated Wanneroo 2-1 in round three of State League Division 2 to register its first win in more than 18 months.

Coach Chris Bates changed the team’s tactics, encouraging the side to press from the front and the early pressure allowed the impressive Tait Comley plenty of opportunity to get forward.

It did not take long for the pressure to pay off.

Ryan Ince took a free kick 30m from goal delivering the ball with plenty of pace to the front post and an unmarked Owen Curtis made a darting run heading home.

Kelmscott appeared to have all the play until five minutes before half time when Captain Brandon Del Fabbro made a wayward pass out of defence gifting Wanneroo the ball.

Kelmscott’s Kristian Usedo managed to thwart the first shot but could do little to prevent the follow up by Jake Makin.

Not learning from their mistake, minutes later goal provider Ince attempted to play the ball out of defence but gifted Martin another opportunity to run through one on one with the defence, but Usedo stood tall to keep the scores level.

In the second half new recruit Sully Rogers left defenders in his wake as he tricked his way past two and fired in a cross to Curtis who was on hand to score his second of the game.

Midway through the second half Curtis had a chance to seal his hat trick and kill the game off as Comley played him through on goal but the big striker’s effort was saved by the Wanneroo goalkeeper.

Wanneroo launched an all out assault on the Kelmscott goal with 10 minutes remaining, but Kelmscott’s Jason Godfrey dealt with the high balls comfortably and Kelmscott saw out the match to get the first win of the season.
