SUMMER-LOVING salvias are an attractive and easy addition to the garden this time of year, according to the team from Miaflora Garden Centre in Inglewood.
Hailing from the mint family with nearly 1000 species, they offer a vibrant pop of colour all year round as well as a pleasant aroma.
And as they are tolerant to heat and dry conditions, regular watering is not necessary.

Position
Full sun/part shade. Select the variety based on the conditions in your garden.
It is also a good idea to ask a horticulturist as in Perth’s climate some varieties prefer part shade and others prefer full sun.
Soil
Well drained soil with good organic matter mixed through. Mulch during warmer weather.
Fertiliser
In Perth, salvias flower all year round. Feed during the two main seasons, spring and autumn, with autumn considered to be peak flowering time.
Pruning
Salvias are a hard plant to judge for pruning time because they rarely stop flowering.
The best time to prune is the beginning of autumn, ensuring a good flush of flowers.
For a heavy prune, it is only necessary after two years of growth. Leave until early spring so they have warmth for nine months ahead.
Reduce by at least 2/3 to generate new fresh growth.
Pest and diseases
They are pretty much pest-free. The aromatic foliage is a natural insect deterrent, which makes them an easy-care option.
