Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: Harcourts ready to step out in support of White Ribbon

MEN will Walk A Mile in women’s shoes on Friday September 2 for the second time in Perth this year.

This year’s national Walk a Mile in Their Shoes will raise funds for White Ribbon’s Breaking the Silence program in schools across Australia, aimed at generational change in attitudes toward violence.

Harcourts’ involvement in the walk started in 2012 in Victoria and last year was the first time the event went national.

The event raised $100,000 nation-wide last year, including $15,000 in WA.

Harcourts WA chief executive Paul Blakeley told Guardian Express organisers “hope to double the funds raised this year”.

“That would be $30,000 in Perth. It’s ambitious but we are doing what we can to promote and build the event,” he said.

Mr Blakeley said Kate Moir – who escaped serial killers David and Catherine Bernie in 1986 and alerted police to their crimes – was the event’s ambassador as part of her work to end violence.

“She is tirelessly campaigning and has been pushing the State Government to abolish mandatory parole for violent criminals,” he said.

All proceeds will be donated to the White Ribbon Foundation.

“A lot of that funding will then go into education programs in schools to teach the kids that violence, especially violence against women, is not on,” Mr Blakeley said.

The walkers will meet at the Bell Tower at 11am on Friday September 2nd for an 11.30am start and 12.30pm finish.

Last year, nearly 800 Harcourts staff, family, friends and supporters across Australia “walked a mile” in women’s heels to show solidarity and bring attention to the national tragedy that is violence against women.

The 2015 event set a new White Ribbon record for a Community Fundraising Activity.
