A much-loved community tree has been saved after a large crack was discovered in its trunk.

The tuart tree on the corner of Pinjarra Road and Old Pinjarra Road in Mandurah is more than 200 years old and on the City of Mandurah’s significant tree register.

But the crack put it and others’ safety in jeopardy.

The city let the community know the good news via its Facebook page.

“After some careful planning and consideration, we will only have to remove around 30 per cent of the tree canopy, which will reduce the load on the trunk and other associated risks,” the city’s post read.

“By doing this, it’s expected to add another 40 years to the tuarts (sic) life.

“We are thrilled with this outcome as we continue to protect and nurture our local natural environment at every opportunity. Preserving mature trees and understanding the value they add to our wildlife and community is just some of the work we do in this space.”

Hundreds reacted to the post with positive comments.

“That’s brilliant news,” one Facebook user wrote.

“Thanks for saving this beautiful old tree. It’s nice to live in a community that cares as l was also concerned as l drove past the other night wondering if the old tree would be there in the morning,” wrote another.

“Spent a lot of time waiting for my kids school bus under that tree; glad it can be saved,” another user wrote.
