Fishers can widen their nets with the reopening of the demersal scalefish season.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has announced boat-based fishing for demersal scalefish, which includes pink snapper, dhufish and baldchin groper, will resume between Kalbarri and Augusta from March 29 to July 31.

Land-based line fishing for demersal scalefish is permitted year-round, with bag and size limits applying.

DPIRD community education co-ordinator Jessamy Bennett said the recent closure was to help stocks recover.

“With the season reopening in time for the holidays, fishers are reminded to brush up on the rules, including the boat limit of four demersal scalefish per boat,” Mrs Bennett said.

“Fishers will also be keen to target Australian salmon during their annual migration along the State’s coast.

“WA salmon typically form immense schools of up to a hundred tonnes or more, composed of thousands of individuals, and can be a lot of fun to catch. They are also good eating when prepared correctly.”

Schools of salmon have been spotted recently at beaches off the South West coast.

DPIRD Statewide operations director Kane Holtom reminded WA fishers to have a recreational fishing licence before heading out.

“There are three easy methods to apply for a recreational fishing licence: online via DoTDirect, in person at select DPIRD offices, or via mail,” he said.

“We recommend all new applicants or existing recreational fishing licence holders register for DoTDirect.

“This will create a free personalised online account where you can manage all your information and pay your licence and registration fees in a secure and user-friendly environment.

“DoTDirect also has a licence tracking to ensure you never miss renewing your licence.”
