Bronwyn Lucas’s love of cooking started at an early age, but it wasn’t until she had her children that she found she could use her skills to help other families.
“I’ve always loved cooking … and I held dinner parties a lot, and then I had my kids,” Ms Lucas said.
“My twins, who are nine-and-a-half now, have anaphylactic allergies to dairy, eggs and nuts.
“The first time I realised, I had eaten a dip with cashews in it and I kissed my son and he came out with a circle on top of his head.
“Then when he was about nine months, I gave him a teaspoon of yoghurt and that ended badly with projectile vomiting in the middle of the lounge room floor.”
The former office manager said the family had to make adjustments.
“It does change your eating,” Ms Lucas said.
“We don’t go to restaurants; it is just too hard.
“I couldn’t tell you how many times we have tried and wait staff just don’t seem to get it.”
When her children were older, Ms Lucas headed the school canteen to help manage an allergy-friendly menu and educate volunteers.
This led her to launching a catering business The Allergy Friendly Food Company.
She said she also had tips for parents throwing parties for their children with allergies.
“Speak to parents to find out which guests have allergies and when shopping, always check the allergen statement on the packaging,” she said.
