Andy Lee’s competitive advantage on Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation

Tanya MacNaughtonEastern Reporter

ANDY Lee has been a long-time fan of Shaun Micallef, so it was impossible to refuse the Australian comedy legend when he asked Lee to become the Gen Y captain on last year’s revamped TV show Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation.

“I was such a Shaun Micallef fan and I really enjoyed the show when I was on it as a guest during it’s last incarnation, so it was a double whammy,” Lee said.

“What you see is what you get with Shaun; he’s loose, he’s wild and he’s certainly unpredictable.

“I was surprised to be asked back for this year’s season. We had so much fun and season two has been even stronger because I’ve got to know other captains Laurence (Boxhall, Gen Z) and Robyn (Butler, Gen X) better.

“If I’m going for a put-down to get the competitive advantage, I now have more knowledge of them to draw upon.

“I feel my scathing remarks are much more on point this year.”

Hosted by Micallef, the inter-generational ‘showgram’ finds the funny in a battle between generations X, Y and Z where each team captain is joined by a celebrity guest.

“It’s just fun and what I do love about it being a generation show is that where my parents will understand one line of questioning, I have no idea about it,” Lee said.

“It comes across well, particularly in this series, where Laurence and his Gen Z pals are talking about technology and apps that really haven’t floated across my radar and certainly Robyn has no idea either.

“But we can make Crocodile Dundee references and Laurence can’t keep up. There is something for everybody.”

This is certainly a program for viewers who like madcap shenanigans, which Lee said are always a surprise.

“You’ll see moments where we are genuinely in shock along with the guests because they don’t tell us anything,” he said.

“There was one in particular where we had to make a meal – a trifle, prawn cocktail and roast chicken – during a power outage. They filmed us with infrared cameras.

“We were completely in the dark trying to make it and I had Brendan Fevola on my team, so you know it’s going to turn in to a food fight.”

With the season already filmed, Lee is preparing for his next adventure with long-time mate and colleague Hamish Blake (Lego Masters), a new Nine travel show called Hamish and Andy’s Perfect Holiday which will screen later in 2019.

Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation airs Wednesdays on Nine from May 1.
