IT will be a family affair when Aussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes performs for the first time at Hotel Rottnest this Sunday for the Rotto Live concert series.

He will have a son playing drums and his wife and two daughters on backing vocals, but there will be the notable absence of daughter Mahalia on stage with Mahalia Barnes and the Soul Mates opening for Tom Jones at Kings Park the same day.

“We’ll have the whole of Perth covered there which is great,” Barnes said.

“But I’m telling everyone to come and see us rather than Tom; or see Mahalia early and then nip across.”

Barnes, speaking while on a family holiday in Bangkok, said although he had visited Rottnest Island, he had not performed at the tourist destination.

“I’ve been on day trips, swimming, fishing and doing all that sort of stuff; it’s a really beautiful place,” he said.

“I’ve never played there before but I’ve spoken to lots of bands who have and say they love it and the audiences love it, so it’ll be a great Sunday session.”

The concert follows his last visit to Perth in November during the Cold Chisel One Night Stand tour

Barnes said this time it would be him playing the greatest hits off his 32 records.

“I just try to pick the best ones they like and put together the best rock and roll show I can do,” he said.

Barnes will be joined by special guest and good mate Jon Stevens, whom he met during the 1980s while Noiseworks were recording their first record in Sydney.

“We were in the studio next door and all hung out,” he said.

“He’s a fantastic singer and a great bloke. We’ve done lots of shows together so we’ll jump up and sing stuff together.”

Barnes, who is a proud grandad to a growing tribe, said life was good and he had no complaints.

“They have fun and all seem to have a fairly instinctual attraction to music which is interesting,” he said.

“I guess they just hear it around the house all day, it’s a natural thing for them to do. And it’s maybe a little bit in the genes too.”
