BASSENDEAN singer-songwriter Delta Oui has dedicated her latest single Because of Her to her late mother who passed away from cancer in July 2017.
The 35-year-old Torres Strait Islander woman, who has been in the music industry since 2012, released the single featuring the Madjitil Moorna choir on November 28.
Drawing inspiration from this year’s Naidoc theme ‘Because of her, we can’, Oui felt honoured to have written a song about women and mothers who inspired women and created a path for the future.

“I sat at my keyboard, put a few chords together and I started thinking of my mum and how she inspired me to be who I am.
“It all just came together in five hours and a couple of days later, I went to the choir and showed them how to do it.
“I am so glad I did it – it has helped me heal with my mother as well.”The mother of three said the song’s message was to “love and appreciate the strong women in your life and people that you love and care about”.
“It is not all the time that we get to say those things,” she said.
“We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our mothers.
“We wouldn’t be the women we are if we did not have that strong role model in our lives.”
Her next goal was to create her first album with fresh tracks in 2019.
