INDUSTRY experience and youthful vision have combined to present By the C on Cottesloe Beach on Sunday, November 20.

Festival directors John Zaccaria (Zaccaria Concerts and Touring) and Luke Whelan (Metric Events, Jack Rabbit Slims) decided to combine their strengths to present this inaugural event featuring John Butler Trio and Angus and Julia Stone.

“We first came together for Castaway Festival on Rottnest Island,” Whelan said.

“It was a good partnership because Zaccaria has a lot of experience in the industry and was predominantly focused on all your large scale touring events, whereas I’ve always been focused on the 18-30 youth market. We were doing similar things but to different audiences.

“John’s (Zaccaria) been working with the council for three years to gain their trust and showed we could put on a safe event with minimal impact on the local community and environment.

“He’s able to bring that reliability and I can add my creative (27-year-old) flair.”

Whelan said they wanted to create an event local residents could be proud to have on their annual calendar.

“Ideally we’ll do between one or two events per year across the summer season,” he said.

“We don’t want to overdo it.

“We’re confident we can create an event that the rest of Australia is jealous of.”

The stage will have its back to the ocean and face the grassed hill to the south of Indiana, with concert-goers on the grass and sand not only getting to experience great acts, market stalls, craft beers and food trucks but the spectacular WA sunset.

Whelan said the line-up was one of the easiest parts of the event to organise.

“Castaway was more of a youth-orientated thing and Zaccaria normally does your older vintage contemporary acts, so we tried to come up with a line-up that sat between both of our worlds that catered for upwards of 25 year olds,” he said.

“Being a coastal local, John Butler on the beach made sense and he has wide appeal.

“He has a song called Ocean which is an epic 12-minute number; playing it by the Indian Ocean will make it even more special.”
