Blanc de Blanc pops at Subiaco’s Regal Theatre

DIRECTOR Scott Maidment’s latest circus cabaret show Blanc de Blanc is all about frivolity and fizz.

“It really came from champagne itself,” Maidment, who also worked on Limbo and La Soiree, said.

“The show has that sophistication, mystery and slow burn that drinking a bottle of champagne has before the pop and bang when it really turns into a party.”

Blanc de Blanc premiered at Sydney Opera House in January this year at the same time Maidment’s Limbo was taking Fringe World by storm in a spiegeltent at Elizabeth Quay.

The show went from Sydney to London for a two-month season before Brisbane Festival and now Perth’s Regal Theatre from September 29 to October 23.

“We decided this time to not go when there’s 10,000 other shows as a competitor,” Maidment said.

“Which also makes me a little nervous because there isn’t that festival vibe this time surrounding it, but so far everyone we’ve spoken to in Perth has been super excited.

“I went to the newly refurbished Regal Theatre when I was in Perth (for Limbo) and thought it was a great space.

“We began this show in a theatre; it works well and gives a bit more sophistication than a spiegeltent.”

The show features host Monsieur Romeo from LA and contortionist and clown Spencer Novich from Las Vegas with other performers including aerialists, a mime artist and dancers.

“While I was working on the Madonna Rebel Heart tour, I’d met choreographer Kevin Maher who lives in LA and suggested some people from there,” Maidment said.

“The circus acts are more performers scattered from all around the world. We patched them together, looking for the best and ended up with a really interesting cast of people.”

Maidment promised he would be back in Perth for Fringe World 2017 and was “just putting the icing on the cake of something new”.

Limbo might also be returning too since everyone loved it so much.”
