THOUGH in Australia we might be excused for thinking this film is about British expats, the title Poms refers to the very American tradition of cheerleading.

When Martha (Diane Keaton) moves to Sun Springs retirement village after a cancer diagnosis, she makes it clear she is there to die.

However, when she involuntarily becomes friends with next-door neighbour Sheryl (Jacki Weaver), she decides to revive an old dream by starting a cheerleading club.

Poms delivers a funny and heart-warming story with aplomb.

The tropes of the tacky Florida retirement village play for laughs to highlight the way older people are treated more often as a single homogenised group.

Every actor in the all-female group clearly has a blast in acting out retirement, with Keaton and Weaver making a great double act and the latter getting all the best lines.

Keaton also provides a serious message as her character’s cancer diagnosis forces her to confront her mortality, a reminder that as we age the idea of death does not become easier.

Poms is essentially a celebration of female friendship, with no male lead to distract from women empowering women.
