Perth burlesque helps Breast Cancer Care WA with Champagne Revue

Sara FitzpatrickEastern Reporter

SYLVIA Sippl may lack the grace and dexterity of a burlesque performer but she has the wit, charisma and penchant for style that makes her the ideal MC of Perth troupe, Lady Velvet Cabaret.

A singer, musician, stand-up comedian and visual artist, the local entertainer is by no means short on talent.

Her passion for illustration led her to the alluring world of burlesque several years ago.

Knowing she could never master the dance element, however, she soon took a shine to the comedy component.

“I am 100 per cent not a dancer, I am purely there for comic relief – there is absolutely no way people would pay money to come and see me dance,” Sippl said.

“I noticed that the performers were always introduced by these really witty men and women who told funny jokes and stories and got the audience involved.

“They got to dress up in awesome costumes as well and I just thought I was born to do that.”

Under stage name Lucinda Panties – a lavish lady with a partiality for leather print and selfies – Sippl has emceed numerous shows around Perth since 2011, including the Fringe World Festival.

Her next gig is the Champagne Revue at newly refurbished nightspot The Monastery (formerly East End Bar) , raising funds for Breast Cancer Care WA.

“We’re hoping to provide a really broad spectrum of entertainment, from song and dance acts to atmospheric lounge singing in breaks, circus performers, a sword swallower and of course standard burlesque acts as well,” Sippl said.

“We are really excited to be inviting not just Lady Velvet Cabaret troupe members but burlesque artists from around Perth also.

“We’ve got a lot of girls coming together just for this cause so it is a real community effort rather than just a standard burlesque show.”
