Cal under currants

Tanya MacNaughtonEastern Reporter

SHE may have performed in Perth a few times with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow, but this month's Perth International Festival will be the first time comedian Cal Wilson brings a full solo show to the west coast.

With a desire to enjoy Perth's warmer weather and raid our op shops, the Melbourne-based comedian will present her stand-up show, Undercurrents, at Mt Lawley Bowling Club from May 7 to 9.

"It's about a bunch of different things, strung together by the idea we all have stuff going on under the surface," Wilson said.

"On the poster, Im buried up to my neck in red currants " Im literally under currants.

"I thought it was a pretty clear joke, until a journo from Brisbane said, "so, tell me about the poster, why strawberries?".

"To be honest, I came up with the idea for the poster, and after Id stopped laughing and high-fiving myself, I realised it fit in nicely with the material I was writing."

Wilson honed the show at April's Melbourne International Comedy Festival, performing at the Swiss Club of Victoria where she was "kept in continuous supply of chicken schnitzel" and got to see other gigs by comedy friends including Claire Hooper and Tom Ballard.

The year does not look like it will be slowing down for the New Zealand-born comedian after her Perth visit, with news she is writing full-time on new ABC program The Weekly starring Charlie Pickering.

"It's been a while since I wrote for TV, and Im enjoying re-developing those muscles," she said.

"Also, it's pretty great having a gig where having to watch TV is part of your job description."
