CINZIA Lee trusts in the power of visualisation and self-belief.
Radiating a positivity that is truly admirable, the Perth cabaret performer is writing her own story of success.
She spun a certain kind of magic before landing the role of Lorraine in the Sydney and Melbourne production of Jersey Boys in 2010.
“I was in New York, three years prior to getting the role, when I saw Jersey Boys and thought, ‘this is the best show I have ever seen, I want to be in this show and I want to play that character (Lorraine)’,” Lee said.
“I looked in the program and the actor had an Italian name like me and I pictured my name in there and then I got the role.
“I think when we believe and set those goals and they happen so easily, it’s easy for us to just brush over it but it’s really important to notice and acknowledge those things when they happen.”
The power of the positive also shone when Lee was just 18 and moved to Sydney.
“I had three goals: to get a musical, to see Australia, and to work with John Farnham and Anthony Warlow,” she said.
“Three months in, I got Grease -The Musical (Donna Sue Miller), we toured Australia for eight months and Anthony Warlow joined our cast as Teen Angel.
“The next time I joined Grease, John Farnham was our Teen Angel.”
Even her latest Fringe World Festival 2017 show, One Hit Wanda! Karaoke Killer, showing at Downstairs at the Maj, involves a touch of magic.
“Last year I did backing vocals for a show called Go Your Own Way, at Downstairs at the Maj, and I had this inner voice saying, ‘one of the reasons you’re doing this is so you can feel what the stage is like because soon you’re going to be doing your own show here’, and here we are,” Lee said.
In One Hit Wanda! Karaoke Killer, Lee plays karaoke-loving assassin, Wanda, who finds therapy through song.
Audience members are invited to belt out a selection of one-hit wonders, but are warned not to outsing Wanda.
“It’s really important to me that people have an amazing time and get to shine and surprise themselves; this makes my heart really happy,” Lee said.
