Claremont Quarter stylist Clare Ryan shares Melbourne Cup tips

Sara FitzpatrickEastern Reporter

THE tailored, classic modern suit will be this year’s biggest winner in the Melbourne Cup fashion stakes, says Claremont Quarter stylist Clare Ryan.

Don’t expect bright colours to take centre stage: Ryan predicts women’s garments in neutrals or soft pastels.

What’s more, hats will make way for hair accessories such as the ‘pearl style’ hairclip and headbands.

“Accessorising correctly can make or break an outfit – and bags and heels are mini this year,” Ryan said.

“For men, there’s a move away from navy (wedding) suits and more towards shades of green and grey.

“This is a nice change for men, particularly for those who have to wear a traditional blue suit to work every day – you don’t want to feel like you’re going into the office.

“It’s also one of the few times of year that a pocket square is a must-have and this spring is all about bright colours and floral patterns – it’s the perfect pop of colour that really adds to an outfit.”

Ryan said racegoers overwhelmed by all the new styles and trends should stick to classic monochrome.

“You can’t go wrong with black and white: it’s a spring racing failsafe and is chic,” she said.

“The races are about looking elegant not extravagant.”

Her top tips for the big day include avoid uncomfortable shoes – you don’t want to be that person who can’t walk in their heels at the end of the day.

She also advises to avoid denim, shorts and dresses that are too short.

“I’m happy to see the end of women wearing flower crowns to the races and men wearing shorts and thongs,” Ryan said.
