Colin Cloud adds Sherlock Holmes skills to The Illusionists

IF you ever wondered what a real-life Sherlock Holmes would be like, then look no further than Scottish forensic scientist Colin Cloud.

In fact, it was this very fictitious character that started Cloud on his career path.

“When I was eight years old I discovered the book Sherlock Holmes by chance,” he said.

“It had a photo on the front of a guy in a weird hat smoking a pipe and I opened it to a page where he was telling people all this cool stuff about themselves and how he knew it.

“The way the book was written, I just assumed Sherlock Holmes was a real person told through the eyes of Dr John Watson. I thought that until I was 10 when I realised he’d never existed; I was devastated but by then the bug had bitten.

“I got into psychology and hypnotism before anything else and then I found out that forensic investigation was actually a thing and I decided that’s what I wanted to study at university.”

With supportive parents, Cloud said the only drawback from his profession was knowing when people lied.

“I think people used to get annoyed when they’d apologise and give an excuse to why they were late and I’d tell them that they were lying and what they were actually doing,” Cloud said.

“I’ve learnt to keep some things to myself so as not to get people into trouble and worked out ways to switch it on and off.

“It also goes the other way as well though, like I’ve never had a surprise birthday party, but I think it’s more beneficial than a negative.”

Cloud joined the cast of The Illusionists three years ago when the biggest selling magic show in Broadway history featuring seven hand-picked stars, each a master in their field, was reassembled.

“They split the core cast in half and half came to the West End in London and half went to Broadway,” he said.

“I came in to make up the numbers in the West End and hosted the show. After that run, they thankfully loved what I brought to the show and said they’d like to make me a core member of the line-up.”

The Illusionists will be at Crown Theatre Perth from June 21-July 2 and Cloud said he would be revealing the audience’s deepest and darkest secrets.

“I’ve taken a lot of stuff I’ve done in my solo shows over the years and brought what I think are my best bits to suit this show,” he said.

“Everything I do involves the entire audience but they’re all going to stay in their seats, so no one needs to feel nervous.”
