Comedian Akmal Saleh brings Trial and Error show to Perth Fringe Festival

AFTER a successful Fringe World season last year, comedian Akmal Saleh will bring his new show Trial and Error to Perth from January 22.

The comedian, who said performing in Perth was a great way to test material, will be back for three weeks and hopes to hone his latest stand-up gig ahead of his national tours – Transparent and Open for Renovations.

“Every year I basically go to Perth and develop a show there, Perth audiences tend to be a bit smarter and you have to try it somewhere – it is trial and error literally,” he said.

“Fringe is great because you are doing it every night and that really helps.

“You have that familiarity and you are just fine tuning it.”

Hoping to give Fringe audiences a completely different show, Saleh said coming up with new material was a balancing act.

“The intention is to make it completely different and be brave enough to try all new stuff and drop old bits,” he said.

“Sometimes you think you need something strong and you pull something out from the archives but it’s a cowardly resort.

“The best way to do it is throw caution to the wind and do it all new.”

Having previously drawn material from his stint on the television show I’m a Celebrity Get me out of Here, the Egyptian native said he was looking forward to seeing who would be taking part in the series this year.

“It’s intriguing – it’s hard not to watch,” he said.

“Sometimes I think, ‘did I really do that or dream it’ – it’s surreal.

“But I did it because I needed money and everyone that goes on that show you can see that look in their eyes that says – ‘I really should have been careful with my money’.

“If you see someone on that show – you know they f…ed up big time.”

Saleh said while he didn’t have anyone in particular he’d like to see in the jungle his gladiatorial side liked to watch people suffer.

“Anyone who is more successful than me I’d like to see in there suffering and starved,” he said.

“I would like to see them injure themselves in some way – not fatal, but just cause them enough pain.”
