ICE Age Live! A Mammoth Adventure presents all the animated film franchise’s lovable characters in a new story on their natural habitat – ice.
Like much of the creative team working on the show, co-director and character designer Michael Curry used his experience of working on Cirque du Soleil to find another way of presenting large-scale theatre.
“The amount of techniques we blend together is unprecedented,” Curry said.
“We were excited to combine high level ice skating with high level circus and dance; this is a first.
“Casting these amazing performers is a challenge because some of them have to be experts in skating, dancing, puppeteers and technical circus.”
Curry said the production took audiences on a broad journey through a very simple story with some new faces added to the mix.
“We needed some bad guys for our story so we created these bird thugs,” he said.
“They are a threat to the Ice Age family; they also are the spring board for some cool fight scenes, something not found in the movie.
“The entire creative team has a background in circus and we created many more fantasy creatures to support various athletic circus acts such as the crazy bear dancers.”
Like any show, there were hurdles along the way and Curry said bringing some of the large characters to life proved a challenge.
“The characters that are relatively human in proportion where easier,” he said.
“Other characters such as the mammoths and Diego required much more inventive puppetry techniques.
“The challenge became making sure the human orientated characters could co-exist with the puppetry orientated characters.”
Ice Age Live! A Mammoth Adventure comes to Perth in its fourth year of a five-year world tour.
Curry said the show had received the same positive reaction everywhere it travelled.
“The main take away is that adult and children alike love it and go away singing the music,” he said.
