Emily Seymour living Sydney Dance Company dream in ab [intra]

Tanya MacNaughtonEastern Reporter

EMILY Seymour had always dreamed of joining her home city Sydney Dance Company, yet never expected it to happen so soon in her career.

The 21-year-old spent three years in America at Houston Ballet before dancing as a young artist at WA Ballet throughout 2017.

“Coming home to perform in Australia was a great feeling,” Seymour said.

“My mum was able to fly over to Perth a few times to watch. Now it feels amazing to be able to perform for my home crowd and have all my family in the audience.”

Seymour began at the Sydney company in February, where she had just over a month to learn the works performed on her first SDC tour to Serbia, Slovenia, Paris and Germany.

Her older sister Lauren Seymour (So You Think You Can Dance season four runner-up) was in Paris to support her.

On return to Sydney the company premiered artistic director Rafael Bonachela’s ab (intra), which will be at His Majesty’s Theatre from June 28 to 30 during a national tour.

The 70-minute work’s title is Latin for ‘from within’ and is a journey into the extremes of human nature.

Seymour said it was a powerful work and, like other Bonachela choreography, found it demanding on her body.

“He’s very technical, which is amazing and I like, especially coming from a jazz and ballet background,” she said.

“You really get to be yourself in it because there’s no right or wrong. When I first joined they told me to find myself, find who I am, and that has been the best advice I’ve been given.”
