MEZZO soprano Fiona Campbell and soprano Sara Macliver can walk into the rehearsal room and know the other is on the same page.

The pair has performed numerous times together since graduating, and motherhood brought them even closer.

“Sara gave me a big hug last night and said she felt so lucky to have me in her life and I feel exactly the same about her,” Campbell said.

“We’re both working mums and have known each other since our babies were little and it was all very tough right across that arc of establishing ourselves as artists.

“Those friendships that span life in that way are special and there aren’t many people who really understand dealing with a busy home life and then having to put on a frock and make-up and appear like we’re opera stars.

“We’re just hardworking mums really with very good-quality lip gloss.”

Campbell and Macliver will be reunited this Friday as guest soloists performing with Voyces in the youth choir’s end of year concert Noel.

Campbell said although she had not sung with Voyces before, she loved being involved with all levels of music making.

“I think it’s important to keep that connection right across the industry; wherever people are in their music making is valid,” she said.

“I love being part of it and I think it’s going to be a beautiful and popular concert that will get everyone in the Christmas mood.

“It’s very family orientated and they do some really lovely repertoire.

“I’m looking forward to singing some Christmas carols and choral pieces that I haven’t sung before plus doing some specky duets with the divine Ms Macliver; it’s a perfect musical pressie with a big red bow and bells on top.”

It has been a busy year for Campbell, which included a one-week whirlwind trip to Munich this month for a world premiere opera recorded for broadcast, and WA Opera’s season of Faust where she played Siebel.

“I love character roles and it was a massive challenge for a middle aged woman to play a teenage boy,” she said.

“But I was thrilled to go there and have been told I did it very convincingly.”

She will finish the year with the Vienna Pops New Year’s Eve concert at Perth Concert Hall.
