COMEDIAN Tommy Little has just one gripe with his WA audiences – stop recommending tourist destinations hours out of Perth.
“The closest place they suggest is Freo but usually they tell me to go to Margaret River,” Little said.
“So the first time I went I thought it must be really close, but it’s a three-and-a-half hour drive.
“But the people of Perth are awesome and Perth Comedy Festival is the last in the run (following Adelaide Fringe Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival), so it’s when all the shows are at their best because we’ve had time to tweak and weed out all the s***.”
Little will bring Good Talk to Studio Underground from May 18 to 21 and said the show’s title said it all.
“Essentially it’s about the opposite of most of the comedy festival shows going around at the moment,” he said.
“Everybody is talking about Trump and how everything is so horrible and I do none of that.
“It’s just a funny show that you don’t have to think about too much and can forget all the stuff that’s going on in your life. Just sit back and have a good old-fashioned belly laugh with me, or at me, I don’t really care.”
Little said he was inspired to create Good Talk after hearing everyone else’s opinions on the world, especially comedians.
“If political comedy is done well it’s great, but if it’s done poorly than it’s just an uneducated man telling you their views on something they’re not qualified to talk about,” he said.
“I was so sick of every comedian thinking they had to chime in on world issues that I went ‘I’ve just got to make sure I’m not that person at the moment’.”
Little, who does afternoon radio with Perth’s Carrie Bickmore, said stand-up would always be his backbone, despite success on television shows The Project and Whose Line Is It Anyway?
“Comedy came out of necessity because I just sucked at everything else,” he said.
“I was studying drama, like a lot of lost kids who don’t know what to do, and I met a comedian while doing that drama course; he encouraged me to do stand-up, gave me my first gig and I just fell in love with it.
“That was nine, almost 10 years ago. A decade of d*** jokes; what an achievement.”
