A HERD of cows has ‘mooved’ in to Darlington’s Juniper Galleries from May 11 to June 2.

An Udder Exhibition by Mandurah artist Leon Holmes features about 40 oil paintings of cows in Germany, Holland and Australia.

“It started when I lived in Germany,” Holmes said.

“My wife’s family home is in a small country village and so I would go and attempt to paint the cows as they slowly moved around the paddock.

“My home studio is in Mandurah, however I do most of my work en plein air (outdoors) and I have a mobile studio, so I can paint anywhere and anything that inspires me.

“All the studies have been done on location from living cows that move and moo.”

Holmes started his career as an apprentice screen printer before studying commercial art, graphic design and illustration back in the late 1990s.

He resigned to pursue oil painting in 2004 and went on to win awards in Holland, Ireland, USA and Australia.

“I enjoy landscape painting and cows bring life into the landscape,” he said.

“The more I study them, the more interesting their movement and behaviour has become.

“It’s a real challenge and something I really enjoy.”
