Hoopla in high places

Tanya MacNaughtonEastern Reporter

BERLIN aerial hoop artists Luka Clayburn and Laura von Bongard approach their work just like anyone else despite the fact they are soaring high above their audience while doing it.

"I think maybe it's the same for other people who have a normal job," Clayburn said.

"If you learn and practice, you'll feel good and safe with what you do.

"But if you start to get out of shape, if you don't practice enough or are not professional enough, then it starts to get really hard " especially if you go on holiday for a couple of weeks or party too much."

The pair, who first met at pre-school but only later reconnected through their mutual love of aerial performance, has joined the cast of Absinthe for the Australian leg of the adult-themed circus, burlesque and vaudeville show.

From the creators of Empire, the Spiegelworld production will set up its Spiegeltent on The Backcourt at Perth Arena from July 11.

It will bring audiences up close and personal to a range of acts including Clayburn and von Bongard's Cavea Aurea (cave of gold), which the performers described as intense and sexy with a little bit of nudity.

"Absinthe did our choreography and I love the song we're performing to, Heavy in Your Arms by Florence and the Machine," Clayburn said.

"We love working together; not only for performing but also for the travelling.

"It's always more fun and you feel better having someone to share the experience with. Especially for Absinthe when we are so far away from home."
