A HOST of Perth talent was recognised when nominations for the 2016 Helpmann Awards, the premier celebration of Australia’s vibrant live performance industry, were announced last night.

Barking Gecko State Theatre Company’s Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories was nominated for Best Presentation For Children and Best New Australian Work.

This second category sees it up against Picnic at Hanging Rock, produced by Malthouse Theatre and Black Swan State Theatre Company, also nominated for Best Lighting Design.

Matilda the Musical was acknowledged with 13 nominations from the 41 categories, with Swanbourne-raised Tim Minchin individually nominated for Best Original Score.

Iain Grandage is up for Best Music Direction for 2016 Perth International Arts Festival opening event, Home and Perth music performer Brent Hill received a nod with Best Male Actor in a Musical for Little Shop of Horrors.

Hill is in the running alongside Rob Mills for his most recent Perth performance in Ghost the Musical.

Those who had the chance to see The Australian Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty when it toured to WA last year would have little surprise in Gabriela Tylesova’s nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Scenic Design.

Prince’s Piano and A Microphone tour 2016 was honoured in the Best International Contemporary Concert category.

Multiple category nomination musicals Matilda the Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, The Sound of Music and Singin’ in the Rain will all tour Perth within the next eight months.

The winners of the 2016 Helpmann Awards will be announced at a ceremony on Monday, July 25 at the Sydney Lyric Theatre on the set of Singin’ in the Rain.

It will be broadcast live on Foxtel Arts and free via webcast.
