Joslin gets physical in The Play That Goes Wrong

ACTOR Luke Joslin was never any good at playing Twister, which is hard to believe for anyone who has seen him play Robert Grove in The Play That Goes Wrong.

The physical nature of the role in this award-winning English farce has seen the Sydneysider limber up.

“I’d never seen the production so didn’t know exactly what I was in for,” Joslin said.

“In fact, I didn’t know exactly what I was in for until day one of the first reading.

“I’d read the script a couple of times but not in the sense of the magnitude of the moment and this is what happens. As it turns out, I’m doing a lot of the physical tricks.”

Joslin’s character Robert plays Thomas Colleymoore in the play within a play as Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society present the disastrous murder mystery The Murder at Haversham Manor.

“The beauty about it is that the way the characters are structured, everyone is so different in terms of their approach to things going wrong,” Joslin said.

“Nick (Simpson-Deeks) as Chris the director gets gravely frustrated and really angsty, while Robert perceives himself as the theatrical professional of the group and it’s important for him to stick it until the end, even though it’s crashing down around him.”

Joslin, who has a great love for comedy, was last in Perth playing narrator Ron Edgeworth in Georgy Girl and before that did a season of Avenue Q at Regal Theatre.

But despite these successful tours, he has longed to perform a show at His Majesty’s Theatre and will have his wish granted when The Play That Goes Wrong opens at the historic venue on May 31.

“I’ve been backstage and had a look at it but I’ve always wanted in my heart of hearts to do a show there,” Joslin said.

“Every time I walked past I would think what a joy it would be to do a show there. I think it could be the nicest theatre in Australia.

“That venue is what I’m most looking forward to; that and going to Margaret River. I’ve never been but have planned a trip with my partner once the show finishes.”
