Justice League review: DC’s brooding mash up of superheroes also fun, energetic and entertaining

Julian WrightEastern Reporter

AFTER some collaborative combat in the long and clunky but passable Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2015), the DC answer to Avengers is now in full swing.

Superman (Henry Cavill) is dead, giving dormant baddie Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds) a chance to come out of retirement, collect three magical and powerful boxes once hidden from him and go on a rampage of world domination.

But Batman (Ben Affleck) won’t stand for it, and so he recruits new superhero bestie Diane Prince AKA Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), lightning fast youngster Barry Allen AKA The Flash (Ezra Miller), the aquatic Arthur Curry AKA Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and experiment gone wrong Victor Stone AKA Cyborg (Ray Fisher) to defeat him.

If only Superman was around to the round out the team.

Clearly a response to audience complaints that DC had gone too dark, grim and broody, Avengers’ Joss Whedon was picked up to lighten the mood, and even directed a few scenes when Snyder had to step back for personal reasons.

His humour barely shines through the gloom that remains, with the exception of the Flash, whose wide-eyed, kid in a candy store reactions to all the chaos is the comedic highlight.

Back stories are scant, special effects are not up to scratch and one particularly cheesy cornfield moment jars against the action, but we have to cut Justice League some slack.

Coming on the heels of Marvel’s success and in the shadow of the marvellous Wonder Woman, comparison is impossible to resist, but the bottom line is this mash up of superheroes is fun, energetic and entertaining.

If you want light-hearted action, you have plenty of Marvel options.

A bit of brooding never hurt anyone.
