Khalil a go-to for the red carpet

Tanya MacNaughtonEastern Reporter

"I was always cutting things out of fabric, creating, making and stitching from a young age," Khalil said.

"No one else took me seriously but it was a strong direction for me."

Now Khalil has become a go-to name for red carpet (Grammys, Academy Awards) and bridal gowns.

Last week he showed his latest collection at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival in Sydney before flying to Perth to open the Carats and Couture exhibition at Linneys, Subiaco.

Khalil said he first became aware of the fine jeweller brand when he asked Perth clients about their beautiful engagement rings.

"I would always hear them say Linneys jewellery," Khalil said.

"So when they approached us to work on their exhibition, it was just a natural progression really."

The exhibition features eight of Khalil's dresses, with a capsule collection of Linneys bridal jewellery.

"Originally we just sent over wedding gowns but we wanted to make it a bit more exciting and threw in some coloured pieces and bigger gowns with beautiful embellished detailing," Khalil said.

"I wanted it to be a combination of some of our newer pieces and some from our archives, which are older couture pieces that are still quite beautiful and modern.

"There are also a few pieces from oversees that have been worn by some of the celebs, so it's a combination of a bit of everything, which is nice."

Khalil said he knew exactly where his passion for bridal wear originated.

"When I was younger I always used to watch royal weddings and I just loved the grandness of the gowns, the opulence and detail, so I was always gravitating to creating wedding dresses," he said.

"Working with girls on their wedding day, celebrity or not, is really special and it's always an honour to be part of that process with them. It's all really important for me and Im just doing what I love."

Carats and Couture is showing at Linneys, Subiaco until April 30.
