Luxury winter home essentials for warmth and comfort

Sara FitzpatrickEastern Reporter

AFTER living in London for 10 years, Andrew Thornton Hick of high-end furniture showroom, Ultimo Interiors, is used to layering snug and stylish fashion looks with coats, scarves and cardigans, playing with different textures and patterns.

He says the same principles apply to home styling in winter – one of his favourite pastimes – with layered fabrics and rugs, and curated interiors infused with warmth and cosiness.

“Winter is a great time to focus on the tactile: warmth underfoot, soft handles on fabrics and tertiary light sources for greater ambience in softer winter daylight and longer evenings,” Thornton Hick said.

“Additionally, one of the greatest joys of the cold season is giving the fireplace a workout; we love the new Tau 40 coffee table from Reflex launched in April.

“The allure of a natural flame and the smell of burning timber are quite instinctual draws.”

At this time of year, the style guru suggests looking for forms that envelop the user such as Bergere-style armchairs with wings, and choosing palettes of soft rust tones and soft sage accents, as well as greens from celadon to forest.

– An authentic handmade lamp

The ODA lamp by Sebastian Herkner: the frosted glass finishes in smoke or aubergine paired with LED filament-style bulbs create a beautiful sense of warmth.

– Cashmere and alpaca throws are the best snuggle accessory

St Albans have been crafting with natural fibres since 1951 and have a wonderful range of knitted and woven pieces.

– The rug sets the scene for winter

The new TELA rug from Rolf Benz is extremely smooth and warm and really makes you want to sit on the floor.

– The world’s most comfortable armchair

I think the superbly comfortable Mauro Lipparini’s armchair design, the Jupiter, will be the next Eames chair for design icon status in years to come.

– Vases and tea lights

My favourite German glassware brand Guaxs has vases and tea lights to set the mood of a well-curated winter interior; the Konam Collection in Butter Brown or Indigo and Smoke Grey is the perfect accompaniment to a winter’s night in.
