Matt Agnew stars as the next Bachelor

Tanya MacNaughtonEastern Reporter

MATT Agnew knows it is cliched but says the best part of his 12 years living in Perth was the weather and beaches.

Ten’s latest Bachelor moved from Adelaide to Churchlands in 1999 with his three siblings when his father was relocated for work.

“Obviously Churchlands isn’t far from City Beach and Scarborough and I lived in Cottesloe for a year or two with some mates in a share house, so I always lived pretty coastal,” he said,

The Melbourne-based astrophysicist studied engineering at UWA, following the common path of oil and gas until he decided he wanted a change.

“When I thought about things that interested me and I enjoyed as a kid, I realised for me that was space and space exploration,” he said.

“I thought astrophysics was space for adults, so I would give it a go.”

Agnew’s thirst for adventure has seen him travel the world, including time living in Germany and Argentina.

“As a kid, my folks were really into travel and instilled this adventurous, curious kind of spirit in me and my siblings,” he said.

“It’s a real passion of mine and something I love, to just explore the world and soak up different cultures.”

A quest for love landed him on this season of The Bachelor, Agnew open to meeting someone by whatever opportunity presents itself.

“In the past, I’d been out with friends of friends, tried my luck in bars and dating apps,” he said.

“For me this was just another avenue to potentially meet a partner I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to explore.

“While it took me a bit of time to make my decision over whether I wanted to do it, I’m really glad that I did.

“I have absolutely no regrets and any concern I had going in to it, completely melted away very quickly.”

Agnew said he was surprised by how quickly he became emotionally invested during the experience.

“I think everyone has an element of not scepticism, but maybe pragmatism in how you can develop a strong connection with someone in such a short period of time,” he said.

“And I’m pleased to say that I did.”
