Megan goes Cheek to Cheek at Fringe

WHEN Harry met Megan at WAAPA in 2015, friendship instantly flourished.

Bonding over a fondness for show tunes and thirst for stardom, the duo embarked on an adventure to Melbourne where they now live, perform, write and audition together.

“I put on my own show here in October but mostly I work at a burrito shop,” Perth’s Megan Kozak said. “I make Mexican food and Harry works at the bar at the Arts Centre Melbourne.

“Auditions come in ebbs and flows. There will be a couple of weeks with quite a lot of auditions and then I’ll go a couple of months where there is nothing and think, ‘what am I doing with my life, have I made the wrong career choice?’.

“It’s not something that’s going to happen overnight; got to give it a red-hot go.”

Kozak’s first taste of success came last year when she scored the role of Monica Lewinsky in Clinton: The Musical.

“I found it very ironic that I moved to Melbourne to begin a performing career and my big job was actually going back home to be in Clinton with Black Swan State Theatre Company,” she said.

Kozak and Harry Prouse’s new act, Cheek to Cheek, is a throwback to the old-school variety show featuring songs like Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better and The Best is Yet to Come.

“It’s about Harry and me: our relationship and how we have moved to Melbourne and what I miss about Perth,” she said.

“Sometimes you go to Fringe shows and don’t know what’s gong on or they are quite confronting or really unusual; we’re just here to sing some great music and have a great time.”

Residing in Windsor, near Chapel Street, Kozak said several WAAPA grads had recently moved to the area, and she and Prouse (originally from the Gold Coast) had established a nice little community.

“What’s great here is there is always so much happening, there is always a show on somewhere and it’s so much easier to get to auditions, so it’s really exciting,” she said.
