My Christmas: WA cricketer Jhye Richardson

Lucy RutherfordEastern Reporter

WE asked WA cricketer Jhye Richardson whether he’s a Christmas enthusiast, the best gift he’s ever received and how he’s planning to celebrate the occasion this year.

Are you a Christmas enthusiast?

Yes, I am. The main thing that I remember from being a kid on Christmas is waking up at 5am and checking presents, trying to guess what they were.

How are you celebrating Christmas this year?

Mum will make us ham and cheese croissants, then we will play five hours of backyard cricket.

Who’s the most competitive in the Richardson Christmas Cricket Match?

Me! My girlfriend Jess is a great wicket keeper and she might have got me out in the past… it can get tense. I think I’ve matured now, but I used to spit the dummy a bit when I was younger and got out.

How does playing on Boxing Day affect your Christmas plans?

Not at all. In fact, the five-hour session on Christmas Day helps get my eye in.

What is the best gift you’ve ever received?

My all-time favourite Christmas present was my first cricket bat when I was eight years old. It was the Ricky Ponting Bat Black Kahuna.
