Passion is in Liz Kelsh’s make-up

DUBLIN-BORN Liz Kelsh is not sure where her love of make-up began but she suspects it is in her DNA.

“Even as a very small child I would collect my aunt’s empty perfume bottles and lipstick bullets and keep them like trophies,” the Sydney-based make-up artist said.

“I remember my mum taking shortcuts through the cosmetics departments to keep out of the rain and to me this was like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

“I still get heady at that first deep inhale on Selfridges’ cosmetics floor.”

Kelsh said she first heard the term ‘make-up artist’ as a teenager and became hooked once realising it was a real profession.

Since then she has done the make-up of everyone from Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman to Ricky Martin, Hugh Jackman and Kim Cattrall.

“I love the endless possibilities of make-up,” Kelsh said.

“It’s the most powerful tool you have in your wardrobe, bringing confidence in a bottle. Make-up can be your best friend that hides your faults and shows off your assets, but most of all it’s lots of fun.”

Kelsh said her top make-up tip for this Christmas party season was to keep skin fresh and let your eyes do all the talking.

“Try a smoky eye with a hint of colour, or a classic statement red lip is always on point,” she said.

“I think my number one make-up tip is to make sure you do your make-up in the best light available; remember you can’t fix what you can’t see.”

Kelsh will be in Perth on December 4 and 5 for workshops, Make-up Made Easy and Make-up Masterclass, at There Is, 49 Stuart Street, Northbridge.

“We will cover everything from flawless foundation and how to make your make-up last all day to false lashes, smoky eyes and everything in between,” she said.

“I’ll show you how to make the most of that drawer full of make-up that you purchased but never use and I’ll also touch on subjects for budding make-up artists.”
