PERTH illustrator Pippa McManus is combining her love of fashion and art with a collection of luxury scarves.

Launching the collection last week, McManus said she had been working on the collection for two years drawing inspiration from her travels.

“I have been collecting Hermes scarves for about 10 years, every time I go somewhere special I buy one big, small, new or second-hand as a memento from that trip,” she said.

“Scarves really are such a beautiful product to translate an artist’s work onto and you can still hang it in your home they way you would a print or painting.

“It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for years and it’s kind of perfect for fashion illustration.”

Basing her first two pieces around her favourite fashion illustration paintings Hothouse Flowers and Sable Ballet, McManus said the collection was different enough to appeal to different people.

“Hothouse is bright, bold and energetic while Sable is softer, romantic and a bit vintage,” she said.

“Wonderful colours for autumn, especially with this trend of long coats popping up again, I tuck one under the lapels or tie it in my hair.

“I wanted it to look just as good as a full piece on a wall, as it would folded and tied traditionally around the neck.

“When wearing as a kerchief or cowboy-style you can see the flowers on the tip, the graphic black and white parts of the girl’s face and flat bold sections of background colour.”

While currently sold online, McManus said hoped to stock the collection in local businesses and would look to expand the range to include more designs.

As much as people say they’re a dying breed, I really believe in bricks and mortar stores and love to support those local businesses who have the stock physically there for you to try on and offer face-to-face expert advice,” she said.

“I’d love to have my own one day and I’d love to add a few more ‘ladies’ to the range.

“Maybe a client voted choice?”
