Perth’s best burgers: from gourmet fare to down-home delights

Staff WritersEastern Reporter

There are few things in life as good as a burger.

According to legend (the legend of Wikipedia), the genius who actually created the burger is up for debate.

Louis Lassen, Charlie Nagreen, Frank and Charles Menches, Oscar Weber Bilby, and Fletcher Davis all claimed ownership of the idea in the late 1800s.

Burgers are a unifying force for good in the earth.

Burgers can power nights out and cure hangovers just a few short hours later.

Perth has no shortage of quality burger exponents. Here’s the cream of the crop.

11. Missy Moos, 400 South Terrace, Fremantle

Missy Moos is fast carving out a name for itself as a burger venue of some repute. For a taste sensation try out their ‘Three Blind Mice’ (pictured below) and their ‘Jack and Jill’ will get us tumbling down the hill to Fremantle as often as we can.

10. RoyAl’s Chicken and Burgers, 8/885 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park

East Victoria Park’s RoyAl channels Pulp Fiction with it’s ‘RoyAl With Cheese’ which, at $11, is one of the best value burgers on the list. For something more adventurous the ‘El Diablo’ hits the spot and the ‘Super Food Burger V’ provides a terrific option for the vegetarian and/or health conscious.

9. East Village, 140 William Street, Perth

Perth’s American-themed diner hits it out of the park with its burgers. For those who like a little kick, you can’t go past the ‘Hell’s Kitchen Double Beef’.

8. Alfred’s Kitchen, James Street and Meadow Street, Guildford

Alfred’s is a Hills legend – you have to be to last for 70 years. The Alfred’s Special (hamburger patty with egg, cheese and bacon in three layers of toast with gherkin relish) is an absolute must.

7. Jus Burgers, 743 Newcastle Street, Leederville

Justin Bell is passionate about burgers and it shows through in every burger his Leederville outlet produces. Using only the freshest local ingredients, he has a fantastic vegetarian selection so no one will go home disappointed. Try the ‘Chickpea’ for a taste sensation you don’t need to feel guilty about.

6. Mason & Bird, 7 Williams St, Kalamunda

With two former Rockpool managers and a former Print Hall head chef at the helm expectations are high. But the juicy burgers, medium, in brioche buns, cheese, pickles, homemade sauce and hand cut chips are sensational. They’re also available all day on the brunch menu.

5. V Burger Bar, 12/910 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park

East Vic Park’s second entry on this list (the burger capital of Perth?), V Burger’s ‘Classic V’ (with extra onion rings) is top notch. Who needs a side of onion rings when you can have them inside your burger?

4.  The Merrywell, Crown Perth, Great Eastern Hwy, Burswood

Be prepared to pay, but The Merrywell’s self-titled burger is a work of serious calorific art. For something a touch lighter, the ‘Bird in Hand’ (worth two in the bush remember) is tough to top.

3. Novembar, 4 Bayley Street, Dianella

The tag line says ‘the greatest burger of modern times’ – and they’re not far off. They do the basics very well indeed, and for a challenge try the ‘Anaconda’ – three patties, five bits of cheese and three rashers of bacon. BYO defibrillator.

2. Flipside Burgers, 239 Queen Victoria Street, North Fremantle

Now with outlets at Wembley, Northbridge and Como, Flipside is fast becoming an empire. But they got there by doing the simple things well. For all their adventurous spirit (blue cheese, pear), it’s hard to go past their ‘Classic’. At $11.50 you could do a lot worse.
