DESPITE its Cuban origins, Ballet Revolucion has a strong connection to Perth – the production made its debut here four years ago.

Dancer Alejandro Perez Fernandez has been with the show since its inception and said he looked forward to their return season at Regal Theatre with a new production from July 21.

“It’s a city dear to the hearts of everyone in Ballet Revolucion because it’s where it started,” Fernandez said.

“We have a lot of respect for the Perth audiences who welcomed us for the first time.”

The 27-year-old Cuban contemporary dancer, who graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Arte, said he always had an inclination towards all things artistic.

“When I started dancing I found a way to canalise all the artistic energy I wanted to express in the way I could dance and act to the music,” he said.

“It was the best medium to express my artistic me.”

Fernandez said he was attracted to Ballet Revolucion, choreographed by Cuban Roclan Gonzalez Chavez and Australian Aaron Cash, first by its energy and then by its concept.

“The audience definitely receives a pure, raw Cuban energy from the stage, which has to do with the joy we have when we perform, “ Fernandez said.

“The idea behind the show to mix contemporary and classical dance for a contemporary dancer was very interesting and a challenge.

“I thought it would help me grow as a dancer and allow me to discover more about myself.”

The 19 dancers are supported by the eight-piece Ballet Revolucion live band playing hits from Sia and Bruno Mars to Beyonce, Usher, Lorde and Jennifer Lopez.
