So Pop bursting with ’90s music blasts from the past at King’s Park

Tanya MacNaughtonEastern Reporter

DUST off those butterfly clips and velvet chokers while grabbing your Tamagotchi and slipping on some cargo pants and jelly sandals because So Pop has been announced for King’s Park on January 30.

Living up to the event’s name, So Pop is set to take fans in a time machine back to the 1990s with a line-up including Aqua, Vengaboys, Blue, B*Witched, Eiffel 65, 2 Unlimited, Outhere Brothers, Lou Bega and Mr. President.

Co-promoter Mel Como said he grew up through the ‘90s and after touring many different artists and events over the years, felt there was an empty space for those wanting to relive and reminisce the decade for one night, under one roof.

“It’s going to be magical, and will bring so much joy to people who grew up (like me) addicted to dance/pop hits of Nineties and Noughties,” Como said.

“I was looking for artists who had multiple number one hits and albums, or artists who took the world by storm with their infectious ‘one hit wonder’.”

While fans prepare to get their Barbie Girl on the Vengabus while riding the Rollercoaster to Mambo No.5, Como said he was most looking forward to seeing 2 Unlimited.

“Their hit song Get Ready For This was one of the first songs I bought on vinyl when I was 16,” he said.

“Ultimately that song and album got me interested in becoming a DJ and forming a love of dance music.

“I then got into promoting dance parties, to nightclubs, to where I am today, promoting arena tours.

“It’s a bit ironic. I will end up meeting and working with the guys 27 years after first playing their songs.”

General public tickets to So Pop go on sale Tuesday, October 16.
