THERE are definitely no diva tendencies in third-year WAAPA musical student Kate Thomas, although her co-star Peanut the Chihuahua who plays Bruiser may demand the spotlight.

Perths own Thomas is in final preparation for her dream lead role of Elle Woods in the Academys major mid-year musical, Legally Blonde, at Regal Theatre, June 13 to 20.

Ive been listening to all the songs ever since the musical came out, Thomas said.

I was absolutely ecstatic when I initially heard we were doing the show and then when I managed to get the role of Elle, I was extremely excited and humbled. Its a big undertaking.

It will be the first time the musical, based on the novel by Amanda Brown and film starring Reese Witherspoon, has been staged in Perth, although Thomas shares the honour with WAAPA alumni Lucy Durack who performed in the east coast production.

The season features 36 cast members from across Perth, in addition to the orchestra, crew, costume designers and rest of WAAPAs talent to present the biggest production undertaking of their year.

Thomas said the storyline followed that of the film, with the transformation of Woods from Harvard law student to lawyer, but many of the characters including Emmett and Paulette had been fleshed-out for the audience.

Its an upbeat, high-energy show with lots of laughs but also has a lot of heart to it, she said.

Elle is such a beautiful character to play.

She is very misunderstood and just needed people to support her to reach her full potential. Shes a very bright girl but people hadnt given her the chance to shine.

Thomas began dancing at age five before adding singing to her talent pool at the start of high school where played a young Cosette in Les Miserables.

As she prepares for graduation at the end of the year, the 21-year-old said her current role was providing her great exposure.

Just having this experience has enriched my skills and given me so much more confidence for the end-of-year showcase, Thomas said.

Hopefully it will help me stand out.
