Tomas Ford holds Crap Music 80s Workout Rave Party at Rosemount Hotel

Sara FitzpatrickEastern Reporter

THIS is the dumbest idea Tomas Ford has ever had and also the most successful.

It’s his Crap Music Rave Party, a surprising little money (and record) spinner earning the Perth cabaret performer a stack of fans around the world.

For the last four years, Ford has toured his concert around Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

“I put this thing together as a bit of a joke and it ended up being huge,” Ford said.

“It’s me messing around and having a good time and it’s a blessing because it means I can tour my cabaret stuff – which is pretty niche – off the back of it.

Now the self-confessed idiot – and self-indulgent music snob at the core – takes his winning formula and ’80s it up with hybrid show, the Crap Music 80s Workout Rave Party.

“I really like getting into some Duran Duran, some early break dancing music; A-ha Take On Me is always a winner, as well as Bros, Rick Astley – if it’s terrible and you can dance to it, then I’ll play it,” Ford said.

“I can’t be playing New Order because everybody likes them – you can request whatever song you want as long as it’s awful.”

The homegrown entertainer doesn’t simply spin records at his dance party – revellers are in for a treat.

“I run around the room touching lights and trying glow sticks, chucking on wigs and various costumes and generally making as much of a fool of myself as possible, so I can establish a base level of stupid in the room, “ Ford said.

“It’s like when you’re at a party and someone goes on the dance floor first and they break the ice – I’m the icebreaker.

“This is a really fun, light-hearted night where you can let loose and do whatever you like on the dance floor because no one is going to look like a bigger idiot than me.”
