Treat yourself with Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow

COMEDIAN Georgie Carroll has only one aim when it comes to performing her set at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow.

“I just want people to laugh really hard,” Carroll said.

“You’re not going to learn anything and I’m not going to try to change your world.

“I’m not going to tell you that your views are wrong and it’s all about common truths; we all put our pants on in the morning.

“I’m very much a mum and a nurse, a wife and do all the normal things and then take the piss out of all of it.”

Born and raised in Manchester, Carroll moved with her husband and two young children (now 13 and 14 years old) to Adelaide a decade ago on the hunt for adventure.

“I had babies, a husband and a career quite early and then just needed to do some exploration of the world,” she said.

“I told my husband we’d only live here for two years but we love it and just cropped up our 10 years.”

She has juggled between nursing and comedy careers in a slow transition where Carroll officially quit nursing in January this year.

“I’m still registered so still legally a nurse, I’m just not employed as one,” she said.

“I’ve had a deterioration of physical health because I have arthritis, so my mobility is not amazing.

“Nursing was getting harder and harder and stand-up was getting easier and easier, and is definitely more fun.”

Carroll credited her nursing background on giving her great perspective on life, which could be seen in this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival show Treat Yourself, previewed at Perth’s Fringe World Festival.

She returns this week as part of the “cracking Roadshow line-up” with Ben Knight (MC), Aaron Chen, Rhys Nicholson, Steph Tisdell and others.

“I love the roadshow because sometimes after the festivals you might think you’re a bit redundant and then, all of a sudden, you have a tour around the country for the next three or four months,” she said.

“The way it works is that we have two different teams who go around the country constantly changing cast.

“They give as many comics the opportunity as they can to build up audience.

“And the Perth shows are at His Majesty’s Theatre so it’s going to be classy.”
