WA Youth Jazz Orchestra artistic director Dr Mace Francis will celebrate his 10th anniversary in the role with a night of Jazz Under the Stars at Quarry Amphitheatre in City Beach on Friday, November 24.

Francis said his time at the youth jazz orchestra had provided him with many professional opportunities and he would mark the milestone with WAYJO delivering a collection of his compositions for big band and premiering several new works specially written for the night.

“WAYJO has been very kind to me since I joined as a musician and a budding composer in 2001,” he said.

“The opportunity to play, compose and rehearse with peers and other professionals has been something that I have appreciated throughout my 10 years as artistic director.

“It’s also been extremely rewarding composing new music with young musicians and seeing them grow as musicians and people.”

Francis was chosen as the inaugural WA 2017 Prelude: Composer in Residence at Gallop House in Dalkeith.

He said the residency had given him the time and space to create some of the new works which would be played on the evening.

Jazz Under the Stars will feature WAYJO’s three orchestras, with the Monday Night Orchestra performing a suite of jazz classics, the Tuesday Night Orchestra showcasing compositions by some of Australia’s finest jazz artists and the Wednesday Night Orchestra delivering the collection of Francis’ compositions.
