BASSOON player Natalya Czernicziw is on the right path to achieving her dream of becoming a professional orchestra musician.
The 21-year-old is in her final year of studying a Bachelor of Classical Performance at WAAPA, while also playing the woodwind instrument with the WA Youth Orchestra since 2014.
“I’d never really had orchestra experience, so it’s good to do that in addition to uni orchestra,” Czernicziw said.

“Even though it’s a youth orchestra, the conductors are so encouraging and knowledgeable with their experience.”
Czernicziw began playing bassoon in Year 8 when a family friend offered to give her lessons.
She had already taken up violin and clarinet in her childhood but it was bassoon she quickly fell in love with.
“I think it’s a really beautiful instrument,” she said.
“It has a lot of opportunities with it because not many people play it.”
Her next opportunity will come when WAYO perform 1812, conducted by Peter Moore at Perth Concert Hall on May 28; Czernicziw will play a solo during Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.
The program will also include the Russian composer’s 1812 Overture, written to commemorate the defeat of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia, and fellow countryman Khachaturian’s Adagio from Spartacus.
“I think it’s going to be a beautiful concert,” Czernicziw said.
“It’s so difficult to get a job as an orchestra musician, so it’s all about working hard at uni, getting as much experience as I can there and with WAYO.
“I’m hoping to travel to Europe in the future.”
