WASO violinist Kate Sullivan is a big fan of film composer John Williams, which is just as well considering the orchestra has covered much of his repertoire this year.

“The music is incredible and it just makes the movies what they are,” Sullivan said.

“His music is a big part of creating the film’s magic. It’s great but incredibly difficult actually for the violinists; we’re playing non-stop and it’s really fast but still enjoyable.”

Following concerts of Williams favourites and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone earlier this year, WASO will present the return of the Harry Potter film concert series with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Concert at Riverside Theatre, November 10 and 11.

Sullivan, who has performed with WASO for two years, said audience members at the previous Harry Potter concert got into the spirit by dressing up as different characters.

“All the movies are great and I’m looking forward to playing this one,” she said.

“Hopefully it’s a little less difficult now that we’ve got the first one under our belts.

“It’s so fun playing the music and watching the movie out the corner of your eye at the same time.”

The 31-year-old confessed to being a Potterhead herself of both the books and films.

“I think they’re the best film adaptations of books made,” she said.

“My best friend’s mum was a librarian, so when we were at school she was reading them before everyone else knew about them. Her mum told her about them and then I was reading them; it was kind of cool.”

Sullivan grew up on the Gold Coast before pursuing music studies in Brisbane and Melbourne.

“My mum is a musician – she’s a flautist – and I think I was surrounded by so much music from such an early age that it was inevitable I’d play some sort of instrument,” she said.

“I was four when I started playing violin and remember being at an orchestra concert, seeing all the violins and pointing out that I wanted to play that one. I have no idea why.”
