CHILDREN have more exposure to celebrity singers than proper musicians and WA Youth Jazz Orchestra is on a mission to rectify this with free Jazz for Juniors concerts during the school holidays.

Part of the Awesome Internationals Arts Festival for Bright Young Things, the performances will be on the Wetlands Stage in Perth Cultural Centre at 12.45pm on October 1, 3 and 5.

“It’s very rare for a child to be able to go to a concert and see and hear a real musical instrument be played, so that is always the best part,” WAYJO education co-ordinator Gemma Farrell, of Willagee, said.

“My own kids love Jazz for Juniors and always ask me about the upcoming shows. I brought my daughter and her friend along to some concerts last year and he came out saying he wanted to be a trombonist. I don’t think there would be many kids who even knew what a trombonist was.”

WAYJO was invited to be part of this year’s Awesome festival program after organisers attended one of the orchestra’s Jazz for Juniors concerts at His Majesty’s Theatre.

Farrell, whose musical education in saxophone took her from Perth Modern to WAAPA, Queensland Conservatorium and Amsterdam for her Masters, said this set of concerts would feature a range of Disney film music.

“I’ve discovered a whole new appreciation for Disney movies while I’ve been working on the music for this one,” she said.

“It has beautiful harmony. My six-year-old is particularly excited about this new Disney addition.

“Kids will be able to interact with the musicians by asking them questions throughout the show, telling them to listen out for certain things, and they will be able to dance.

“You don’t usually see so many people jumping around with as much energy to this kind of music. It’s quite fulfilling.”
