IT was four years ago that the blockbuster musical Wicked first made its appearance in Perth and Thursday night it made a welcome return to Crown Theatre on the last leg of its 10th anniversary tour.
With breathtaking sets, this show is a sensory masterpiece of theatre, with all the bells and whistles one expects to see in a multi-million-dollar production.
Staged within a clock-like set overseen by a large dragon and aided by spectacular lighting, the story of good versus evil and ultimately the trials and tribulations of friendship unfolds.
The vibrant ensemble cast in their lavish costumes are superb in complementing the main characters.
Dance numbers are beautifully executed and a visual feast for the audience.
Perth-raised Suzie Mathers is a breath of fresh air as Glinda.
She brings life to the character of the ditzy, bubbly, blonde good witch, delivering one-liners with the right amount of humour and effortlessly handling the singing with her clear voice.
It has been such a pleasure watching this young woman grow from WAAPA graduate to leading lady in a number of major productions.
Jemma Rix as Elphaba the greenified witch is outstanding in her stage presence.
She handles many of the shows demanding big numbers with ease and her rendition of the musicals smash hit Defying Gravity showcases the range of her powerful voice.
The chemistry between these two actresses is so good, it is easy to see why they are able to keep their roles fresh every night.
With his swashbuckling good looks, Steve Danielsens portrayal of the affable Fiyero, the pairs flighty love interest, is perfect casting.
Much-loved musical theatre performer and singer Simon Gallagher is fabulous as the Wizard, while Maggie Kirkpatrick returns as the conniving Madame Morrible.
This writer has seen Wicked a number of times and each production never fails to provide something fresh and new to cast its spell every time.
It is a not-to-be-missed, all-encompassing theatrical extravaganza of epic proportions and if you havent already been ga-lindafied, grab a ticket, as Wicked flies out on June 28.
