DAVID slew Goliath again in the first round of the WA Rally Championship when Tom Wilde and Madelin Kirkhouse won the Kin Kin Rally – in a front-wheel drive 1993 Honda Civic.
It was the first time a two-wheel drive had won a WARC round since rally ace Bob Nicoli did 23 years ago in his Daihatsu Charade.
Also remarkable was that it was Wilde and Kirkhouse’s first pairing in a rally.
Veteran John Macara was leading in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 7 until Stage 6 when he had an off, and Nic Box, in an Evo IX, had to retire with mechanical problems.
Busselton driver Wilde (29) said he never thought an outright win was possible in his little Civic but was thrilled to take home the silverware.
“It wasn’t until about halfway through that I saw the times and thought we had a chance to win both the outright and 2WD categories,” he said.
Second outright was Stephen Oxley and Michael Wood in a 2008 Subaru WRX STI, with John O’Dowd and Kenneth Sheil third in another Impreza WRX STi.
