FORTY-two public schools in WA have been granted independent public school status for 2019 and onwards.

This addition takes the total number of independent public schools to 573.

Schools and their communities can make local decisions while principals will have more flexibility on staff recruitment, financial management, governance and accountability.

This is the seventh intake of independent schools since the initiative was first announced in 2009.

Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery said she was looking forward to seeing how the status benefited students and school communities.

“Western Australia is leading the way in giving local schools and communities more say on their children’s education,” she said.

“By helping schools and communities come together, we are ensuring children’s learning, welfare and development is the driving force of all decisions.”
