Aldi looking to expand footprint in Perth

Laura PondEastern Reporter

SUPERMARKET chain Aldi wants to increase its footprint in Inglewood.

The German company gained approval in 2017 to build a supermarket, two restaurants and parking on Beaufort Street between Tenth and Eleventh avenues.

It has since bought a neighbouring site housing Tyrepower and is seeking City of Stirling approval to demolish it.

The revised proposal extends the development along Beaufort Street, with parking at the rear, and would enable it to scrap basement parking and instead spread parking across the street level.

The purchase snagged Aldi an additional 1366sq m but will see the shop floor space slightly reduced by 61sq m and the number of parking bays drop from 77 to 72.

The existing approval restricted delivery times because of concerns about noise affecting neighbouring homes.

Aldi appealed to the State Administrative Tribunal over the restrictions, seeking to have delivery times reassessed on the revised layout, which it said would move the store farther from residential properties to the east.

Its application said it was important the supermarket could receive deliveries outside normal operating hours and its design had tried to maintain neighbours’ “level of amenity”.

“The design of the building responds to the adjoining built form scale and provides a sensitive transition to the residential lots,” the submission said.

The store is proposed to open from 8am to 8pm weekdays, 8am to 5pm Saturdays and 11am to 5pm Sundays.

The City is seeking feedback on the plan until February 12 here.

The application will then go to the Metro North-West Development Assessment Panel for consideration.
