Kristie LimEastern Reporter

BLACKSPOT funding to improve road safety at some of Bassendean’s intersections and roundabouts is set be considered in the Town’s 2016-17 Capital Budget review in February.

Councillors passed a motion to accept State Government funding for three intersection projects, where Main Roads WA would fund $124,666 and the Town $62,334 and to allocate funds from the Whitfield Street footpath project to this program.

Median islands will be installed on Ida Street at the intersection of Walter Road East.

The second and third project will see the installation of pre deflection curves in Iolanthe Street approaching the roundabout of Anzac Terrace and on both approaches of Iolanthe Street at the roundabout of Broadway.

At the Ida Street and Walter Road East intersection, there has been eight listed motor vehicle accidents in five years, with right turn crashes the most frequent.

The second location had seven accidents, many due to ninety-degree collisions and high approach speeds.

However, the roundabout at Iolanthe Street and Broadway had the most accidents at 13.

In 2015-16, the Town completed safety measures worth $165,000 at the corner of Iolanthe Street and Walter Road East.
