Bassendean launches bike repair station

CYCLISTS can now pump their tyres at a street-side bike repair station in Bassendean.

The Town of Bassendean installed the station on the corner of Whitfield Street and Old Perth Road, outside Jones and Co Real Estate on May 25.

It is part of the Town and the Department of Transport’s Your Move program, which helps residents, workplaces and schools become more active and connected with their local community by considering travel choices.

Chief executive Peta Mabbs said the station was part of a broader commitment by the council to look at alternative forms of transport other than vehicles.

“Not only it is good for our people but it is good for our environment and reduce carbon emissions,” she said.

“Its location aims to compliment the upcoming Whitfield Street Safe Active Street (project) which will start construction in late 2019.

“The Safe Active Street will make Whitfield Street a bike friendly road so residents can easily access the train station and principal shared path along Guildford Road.”

Mayor Renee McLennan said she sometimes cycled to the town centre to get an after school treat with her kids.

“This week, on the way home, the chain came off my bike,” she said.

“It was getting dark and my two munchkins were rocking around in the bike-trailer so I was struggling with the bike.

“A kind hearted community member came to our assistance and helped put the chain back on.

“It’s wonderful to know that there are people to help and for the first time, a new bike repair station when we need it.”
